However, recent findings from Checkmarx have revealed that this AI-driven approach is not without its risks and pitfalls.

    The story begins with Anthropic's introduction of automated security reviews in Claude Code last month, touting the benefits of such an endeavor. The AI-driven review checks for common vulnerability patterns including authentication and authorization flaws, insecure data handling, dependency vulnerabilities, and SQL injection. While these features may seem promising, Checkmarx has discovered that the /security-review command in Claude Code was successful in finding simple vulnerabilities such as cross-site scripting (XSS) and an authorization bypass issue that many static analysis tools might miss.

    However, this success is short-lived, as the researchers also found that the security review tool was defeated by a remote code execution vulnerability using the Python data analysis library pandas. Furthermore, when code is crafted to mislead AI inspection, such as a function called "sanitize" complete with a comment describing how it looked for unsafe or invalid input, which actually ran an obviously unsafe process, the security review tool declared "security impact: none."

    The researchers have identified two primary concerns with Claude Code's automated security reviews. Firstly, the tool generates and executes its own test cases, which poses a significant risk if not handled properly. The potential snag here is that simply reviewing code can actually add new risk to your organization. For instance, running a SQL query, which would not normally be a problem for code in development connected to a test database, becomes a concern when executing code to test its safety.

    Secondly, the researchers have raised concerns about the suggestibility of Claude Code's AI-powered security reviews. The tool relies on complex algorithms and machine learning techniques to analyze code, but these same technologies can also be exploited by malicious actors. In other words, Claude Code is susceptible to suggestion, making it an unreliable tool for ensuring the security of applications.

    In light of these findings, Checkmarx has issued four tips for safe use of AI security review: do not give developer machines access to production; do not allow code in development to use production credentials; require human confirmation for all risky AI actions; and ensure endpoint security to reduce the risk from malicious code in developer environments.
