According to a recent study conducted by security researchers Ben Nassi, Stav Cohen, and Or Yair from Tel Aviv University, Technion Israel Institute of Technology, and SafeBreach respectively, these types of attacks involve the use of indirect prompts injected into AI systems, which can lead to malicious actions being taken by the AI. The study revealed that such attacks are possible through "promptware," a series of prompts designed to consider malicious actions.
The researchers developed 14 different attacks against Gemini, including ones that could trigger spam links, generate vulgar content, open up the Zoom app and start a call, steal email and meeting details from a web browser, and download a file from a smartphone's web browser. In one particularly concerning example, after a user thanks Gemini for summarizing calendar events, the chatbot repeats the attacker's instructions and words—both onscreen and by voice—saying their medical tests have come back positive.
One of the most disturbing aspects of these attacks is that they can cause real-world consequences, such as turning off lights, opening smart shutters, or even controlling home devices. This is because AI systems like Gemini are increasingly connected to physical devices, making them vulnerable to exploitation.
Google's Andy Wen, a senior director of security product management for Google Workspace, acknowledged the vulnerabilities but emphasized that tackling prompt-injection attacks is a challenging problem due to the evolving nature of these types of attacks and the growing complexity of the attack surface. However, Wen also noted that Google has introduced multiple fixes and is taking steps to detect potential attacks at three stages: when a prompt is first entered, while the LLM "reasons" what the output is going to be, and within the output itself.
The researchers' study highlights the need for tech companies to prioritize security in their development of AI-powered applications. Nassi stated that today's industry is experiencing a shift where LLMs are being integrated into applications at an unprecedented rate, but security is not keeping pace with these developments. "LLMs are more susceptible" to promptware than many traditional security issues.
