AI's Dark Side: The Potential for Sophisticated Infrastructure Attacks

AI has the potential to turn script kiddies into sophisticated infrastructure attackers, but experts warn that more needs to be done to prevent this threat from becoming a reality. A recent report highlights the risks and recommends proactive measures to protect critical infrastructure.

  • AI can make it easier and faster for human attackers to target critical infrastructure and gain access to utilities and manufacturing plants.
  • Ai can bridge the gap between novice and experienced attackers, allowing even those with basic skills to launch attacks.
  • A recent report found that AI-powered tools can accelerate the planning and execution of attacks, with some models achieving success rates of over 90%.
  • The use of AI-powered tools can be prone to hallucinations, and human judgment remains essential to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Defenders can mitigate this risk by implementing a layered defense, segmenting networks, limiting remote access, and testing recovery steps.

  • The potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to turn script kiddies into sophisticated infrastructure attackers is a wake-up call for the cybersecurity community. According to operational technology (OT) security experts, AI has the potential to make it easier and faster for human attackers to target critical infrastructure, gain access to utilities and manufacturing plants, and perform OT system reconnaissance.

The threat is not just limited to script kiddies, but also includes more sophisticated nation-state attackers. However, AI can help bridge the gap between novice and experienced attackers, allowing even those with basic skills to launch attacks. The use of AI-powered tools can accelerate the tooling, access, and knowledge transfer, making it easier for attackers to plan and execute attacks.

A recent report by Frenos, a security company that does AI pentesting for OT environments, examined the extent to which AI could help someone plan an attack on industrial systems. The report tested six frontier models, two US open weight models, and two foreign open weight models on three kinds of tasks: choosing one action, planning the steps to a goal, and working through a simulated scenario. The results showed that the strongest three frontier models succeeded in about 90 percent of their planning attempts, but these same models weren't consistent.

The report also found that the most successful of the four open weight models - a non-US model - achieved a 36.2 percent overall success rate. This figure was still higher than the overall success rates of three other US frontier models, which scored 31.9 percent, 18.8 percent, and 17.9 percent, respectively.

While the report's findings were promising, the authors noted that the models were still prone to hallucinations - aka mistakes. They emphasized that human judgment remains essential for these AI models to make the threat actors achieve whatever mission or goal they're trying to achieve.

To mitigate this risk, the report recommends actions for OT defenders to take, starting with a layered defense. This involves segmenting networks, limiting remote access and user permissions, and testing recovery steps. The authors also noted that the use of more capable harnesses could give AI models more of an edge.

The potential for AI to turn script kiddies into sophisticated infrastructure attackers is a concerning development in the cybersecurity landscape. As AI continues to improve, it's essential that defenders take proactive steps to protect critical infrastructure and prevent attacks.
