A critical Android flaw has been discovered that could allow a remote code execution (RCE) attack without any user interaction. Google has issued patches for the affected versions of Android, and users are advised to check their phone's security patch level to ensure that they have the latest updates. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-58868, affects Android 14 through 17, and can be exploited by an attacker to run code on a phone remotely, without the need for any user action. This is a serious security threat, and users should take immediate action to protect their devices.
Android users are facing a critical security threat due to a remote code execution (RCE) attack vulnerability (CVE-2026-58868) that can be exploited without user interaction. The vulnerability affects Android 14 through 17 and can cause a heap buffer overflow in the FrameDecoder.cpp file, allowing an attacker to run code remotely. Google has issued patches for the affected versions of Android, and users are advised to check their phone's security patch level to ensure they have the latest updates. Older versions of Android, such as Android 12 and 13, are not listed as affected, but their vulnerability status is unknown. Users can check if their phone is affected by following the steps provided by Google, including checking the security update and Google Play system update dates. Other critical flaws listed in the November bulletin include two more that could allow remote code execution, CVE-2026-58876 and CVE-2026-58936, both in Android's System component. The most severe kernel flaw could allow a remote attacker to gain elevated privileges without user interaction. A total of 216 vulnerabilities were listed in the November bulletin, with 23 rated Critical.
Android users are facing a new security threat with a critical flaw that could allow a remote code execution (RCE) attack without any user interaction. According to Google's November security bulletin, the vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-58868, affects Android 14 through 17, and can be exploited by an attacker to run code on a phone remotely, without the need for any user action. This vulnerability is considered critical, and Google has issued patches for the affected versions of Android.
The flaw is caused by a heap buffer overflow in the onOutputReceived function of the file FrameDecoder.cpp, and is a possible out-of-bounds write. However, Google's Critical rating assumes that the protections built into Android and Google's services are turned off or bypassed. This means that even if the user has security patches installed, the vulnerability can still be exploited if the protections are not enabled.
Older versions of Android, such as Android 12 and 13, are not listed as affected by the flaw. However, Google's records do not say whether they contain the vulnerability. To check if your phone is affected, you can follow the steps provided by Google, which include opening the Settings app, tapping About phone, and finding the dates for the Android security update and the Google Play system update.
The Android security update date is the phone's security patch level, and a date of 2026-11-01 or later covers CVE-2026-58868 and other flaws in the Framework, System, and Android runtime components. Phones running Android 10 or later may also receive some fixes through Google Play system updates, but the date to check for CVE-2026-58868 is the Android security update.
Google sets two dates so that phone makers can ship a set of fixes common to all Android devices sooner. It encourages them to include every fix in the bulletin. However, the bulletin gives no workaround for phones that cannot install the update yet.
Another critical flaw, CVE-2026-58882, could allow a remote denial-of-service attack with no user interaction, according to its CVE record. It is in decodeWapPdu, a function in Android's code for WAP Push messages that arrive via SMS. On October 29, a researcher who publishes as Mark B posted a write-up called "SMS of Death" about a bug in the same function. Neither the bulletin nor the CVE record says whether CVE-2026-58882 is that bug.
One malformed WAP Push message crashes com.android.phone and ends any active call, including emergency calls, according to the write-up. In tests on several phone models, the crash happened every time. The attacker needs only the target's phone number, and the message never shows up in the inbox. The phone retries the message each time it starts, so it can crash on startup until the message is removed.
Other critical flaws listed in Google's November bulletin include two more that could allow remote code execution, CVE-2026-58876 and CVE-2026-58936, both in Android's System component. Six critical flaws are in the kernel, two of them in Bluetooth code. The most severe kernel flaw could allow a remote attacker to gain elevated privileges without user interaction.
In addition to these critical flaws, the November bulletin lists 216 vulnerabilities, 23 of them rated Critical. Two more critical flaws could allow remote code execution, CVE-2026-58876 and CVE-2026-58936, both in Android's System component. Six critical flaws are in the kernel, two of them in Bluetooth code. The most severe kernel flaw could allow a remote attacker to gain elevated privileges without user interaction.
Google has issued patches for the affected versions of Android, and users are advised to check their phone's security patch level to ensure that they have the latest updates. It is recommended that users follow the steps provided by Google to check if their phone is affected by the vulnerability.
