    The term "vibe coding" was first introduced by Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42, which is a group that focuses on identifying and mitigating emerging security threats. In a recent interview, Kate Middagh, senior consulting director for Unit 42, revealed that the group has been monitoring instances of vibe coding being used to create malware. According to Middagh, "Everybody's asking: Is vibe coding used in malware? And the answer, right now, is very likely yes."



    The use of AI-powered tools in creating malware allows attackers to produce high volumes of code at an unprecedented speed and efficiency. This makes it increasingly difficult for security teams to detect and respond to these types of attacks.



    According to Middagh, the AI models used by these attackers are often trained on vast amounts of data, including publicly available information and even legitimate software sources.     However, unlike human attackers who would typically test their malware for effectiveness before releasing it, vibe coding malware often suffers from a phenomenon known as "hallucinations."     Another concern raised by Middagh is the lack of human oversight in the creation of these malware tools. "We're seeing instances of hallucinations where the LLM will call it 'readme.txtt,'" she said. "That's a mistake that a threat actor would never make – that's like Ransomware 101."



    Middagh attributes this lack of human oversight to the speed and efficiency at which AI-powered tools can produce code. "They're moving so fast, and they're not doing much in the way of validation or checking, that these things just happen," she explained.



    This trend is particularly concerning for organizations that allow their employees to use vibe coding tools without implementing adequate security controls. According to Middagh, most organizations have not performed any formal risk assessment on these tools, nor do they have security controls in place to monitor inputs and outputs.



    "Everybody is so excited about using AI, and having their developers be speedier, that this whole least privilege and least functionality model has gone completely by the wayside," Middagh said. "If you are an enterprise, there's a couple of ways you can control and address the risks of vibe coding."



    One approach recommended by Middagh is to apply principles of least privilege and least functionality to AI tools much as one would with human users. This involves granting only the minimum roles, responsibilities, and privileges needed to do their job.



    "The way forward would be the SHIELD framework," according to Middagh. "SHIELD stands for Security Controls Throughout the Environment and Learning and Implementation Dynamics."



    The development of AI-powered malware tools highlights the evolving nature of cybersecurity threats. As AI technology continues to advance, it is essential for organizations to stay vigilant and adapt their security controls to address emerging risks.
