In a move that has sent shockwaves through the gaming and anime communities, CD Projekt Red and Arc System Works have collaborated on a groundbreaking crossover between their respective IPs, Cyberpunk 2077 and Guilty Gear Strive. The latest addition to Guilty Gear's roster is none other than Lucy, the standout character from the critically acclaimed anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Lucy, a skilled netrunner with a penchant for hacking and stealth, brings her unique set of skills to the world of Guilty Gear. Her inclusion in the game has been met with widespread excitement, as fans of both franchises eagerly await the opportunity to play as their beloved characters in a new and challenging context.
In an exclusive interview with io9, producer Satoru Homma revealed that Lucy was always considered the prime choice to bring over from the anime. "Both CD Projekt Red and Arc System Works agreed that out of all the Edgerunners characters, Lucy was an excellent fit for this collaboration," Homma explained. "She is a key part of the show and comes equipped with a wide variety of attack options. She can use her Monowire for melee attacks, a handgun to engage enemies from a distance, and, of course, she can hack enemies."
Homma also touched on the challenges of adapting Lucy's combat style within the game's engine, citing the need to find the right balance between bombastic action and grounded, realistic gameplay. "Since Guilty Gear features bombastic action while our IPs are more grounded, it was a bit of a challenge to find the right balance," Homma admitted. "While Edgerunners is somewhat of an exception to our grounded style, given that it's an anime, we still wanted Lucy to stay true to herself as depicted in the show."
When asked about the process of animating Lucy's combat style within the game's engine, Homma revealed that Arc System Works spent a great deal of time learning about both Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077 to understand how netrunners potentially fight. "We wanted to make sure her fighting style would not only capture Lucy's personality from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners but also fit in the Guilty Gear Universe," Homma explained.
The inclusion of Lucy in Guilty Gear Strive has been met with widespread acclaim, with fans of both franchises eagerly awaiting the opportunity to play as their beloved characters in a new and challenging context. When asked about the kind of feedback they had seen from fans, Homma revealed that both communities were incredibly excited about Lucy's addition to the game. "Personally, I believe fans of both IPs are incredibly excited about Lucy's addition to Guilty Gear," Homma said with a smile. "I personally love Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, so I was truly delighted to have the chance to collaborate on this project."
In addition to her inclusion in the game's story mode, Lucy will also have her own distinct Arcade Mode structure, which eschews the traditional branching narrative of previous characters in favor of a more streamlined experience. "Traditionally, Guilty Gear Strive's Arcade Mode changes in difficulty and dialogue depending on the results of each battle," Homma explained. "For Lucy's Arcade Mode story, however, we introduced a different structure where the story doesn't branch. Instead, clearing Chapter 1 unlocks Chapter 2, and so on."
The success of this collaboration has sparked hopes that future crossovers between Edgerunners characters and other franchises may be on the horizon. When asked about the possibility of future collaborations, Homma revealed that CD Projekt Red is already working on an Edgerunners project with Wuthering Waves. "In fact, we've already announced an Edgerunners collaboration with Wuthering Waves!" Homma exclaimed. "We firmly believe that passion is key to success for these collaborations."
As the gaming and anime communities continue to eagerly await more news about Lucy's inclusion in Guilty Gear Strive, it remains to be seen how this groundbreaking crossover will shape the future of both franchises.
