  • The attack resulted in the theft of approximately 8 TB of data and over 11 million documents from Foxconn's servers.
  • Foxconn is not the first company to fall victim to ransomware attacks, having been targeted by LockBit and DoppelPaymer groups previously.
  • The Nitrogen ransomware gang has a coding mistake that renders files irreversibly corrupt, making decryption difficult.

  • In a shocking revelation, electronics giant Foxconn has confirmed that its North American factories were targeted by a cyberattack, attributed to the notorious Nitrogen ransomware gang. The attack, which was first reported earlier this week by BleepingComputer, saw the theft of an estimated 8 TB of data and over 11 million documents from the company's servers.

According to a statement released by Foxconn, some of its factories in North America suffered a cyberattack, prompting the company's cybersecurity team to activate response measures. The affected factories are currently working to resume normal production operations, with Foxconn assuring that all necessary steps have been taken to mitigate any potential damage.

The Nitrogen ransomware gang, which emerged in 2023, has been linked to several high-profile cyberattacks and data breaches in recent years. According to Coveware security researchers, the group's malware contains a coding mistake that causes it to encrypt files with the wrong public key, rendering them irreversibly corrupt.

This is not the first time Foxconn has fallen victim to ransomware attacks. In January 2024, the LockBit ransomware gang claimed to have hit Foxconn subsidiary Foxsemicon, while in late May 2022, a Foxconn production plant in Tijuana, Mexico, was also targeted by the LockBit group.

In addition, Foxconn has faced another cyberattack attributed to the DoppelPaymer ransomware operation in December 2020. The attack saw the theft of approximately 100 GB of data from Foxconn's CTBG MX facility in Ciudad Juárez, with the group demanding a $34 million ransom.

The latest cyberattack on Foxconn highlights the ongoing threat posed by ransomware attacks to organizations across various industries. As technology continues to evolve, it is essential for companies like Foxconn to prioritize robust cybersecurity measures and stay vigilant in protecting against such threats.
