The recent discovery of residential proxy traffic leaving through the White House network has raised concerns about the potential exposure of internal systems. The Layer3 Intel researchers found 236 connections through the network between October 5 and November 3, highlighting the ease with which malicious actors could potentially exploit the network if a poorly secured proxy SDK has a similar flaw. This discovery underscores the need for robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access to internal networks and protects against the risks of residential proxy networks.
Layer3 Intel discovered residential proxy traffic leaving through the White House network, raising concerns about potential exposure of internal systems. The researchers found 236 connections through the network using 6 IP addresses and 28 residential proxy services between October 5 and November 3. Poorly secured proxy SDKs can allow internal network access and lateral movement, as documented by Synthient's research on the Kimwolf botnet. Residential proxies have infected every corner of the world, with no place they cannot reach, according to Layer3 Intel's tracking. Devices connected to protected networks could unknowingly become proxy exit points, potentially exposing those networks to outside traffic. Security teams must now be aware of the potential for residential proxy networks to compromise protected networks and implement robust security measures.
The recent discovery by Layer3 Intel of residential proxy traffic leaving through the White House network has raised concerns about the potential exposure of internal systems. The researchers spotted this activity while browsing their new Residential Proxy Observatory, a tool that gives a global view of residential proxy and anonymized internet activity. The observatory found 236 connections through this network between October 5 and November 3, with six IP addresses and 28 residential proxy services used to access the network.
The White House network is registered to the Executive Office of the President, the federal agency that hosts the White House network. The researchers noted that the activity was not targeted towards the network, but rather caught by chance while requesting global rotating access through public residential proxy services. This highlights the ease with which malicious actors could potentially exploit the network if a poorly secured proxy SDK has a similar flaw.
Past research has shown that poorly secured proxy SDKs can allow internal network access and lateral movement, as documented by Synthient's research on the Kimwolf botnet. The researchers at Synthient documented how the Kimwolf botnet reached at least 2 million devices, mostly Android devices with an exposed ADB service, through residential proxy networks. If an SDK on the White House network has a similar flaw, anyone buying proxy access could use it to reach internal systems.
Layer3 Intel tracked residential proxy and anonymization infrastructure worldwide and found that residential proxies have infected every corner of the world, with no place they cannot reach. The researchers also found 413 addresses in Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, a South Atlantic territory that includes the most remote inhabited island in the world. Additionally, they detected three instances of proxy activity in Antarctica and found one address in Pitcairn Island, Norfolk Island, and Svalbard.
The researchers concluded that the data shows the exits, not the device or the person behind them, and that devices connected to protected networks could unknowingly become proxy exit points, potentially exposing those networks to outside traffic. However, Layer3 Intel emphasized that its data only shows where proxy traffic exits, and it cannot identify the device being used or the person behind it.
This discovery has significant implications for security teams, who must now be aware of the potential for residential proxy networks to compromise protected networks. As the use of residential proxies becomes more widespread, it is essential to implement robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access to internal networks.
