  • A hacker, known as "Rey" and a member of the Hellcat Ransomware group, has threatened to leak 106GB of data allegedly stolen from Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica. The breach, which allegedly occurred on May 30, appears to have resulted in the exfiltration of a large amount of sensitive information, including internal communications, purchase orders, customer records, and employee data.

The threat actor claimed that they had 12 hours of uninterrupted data exfiltration before defenders revoked access, but Telefónica has not acknowledged the breach. Despite numerous attempts to contact the company, BleepingComputer received no acknowledgment of the May 30 breach. However, a Telefónica O2 representative dismissed the incident as an extortion attempt using outdated information from a previously known incident.

The leaked data, which consists of five gigabytes of files with over 20,000 files, was initially distributed using PixelDrain storage and data transfer services but was removed after a few hours for legal reasons. The threat actor later distributed another download link from Kotizada, a service that Google Chrome flags as a dangerous site and strongly recommends users to avoid it.

The leaked data includes invoices to business clients in multiple countries, email addresses for employees in Spain, Germany, Peru, Argentina, and Chile, and invoices for business partners or customers in European countries. Some of the files date back to 2021, which appears to confirm what the company representative told us about the breach being an older incident.

The Hellcat hacking group is not new on the scene and has been responsible for multiple attacks at high-profile companies. They claimed compromises at Swiss global solutions provider Ascom, Jaguar Land Rover, Affinitiv Schneider Electric, and Orange Group. This latest breach highlights the ongoing threat of ransomware attacks and the importance of having robust cybersecurity measures in place to protect sensitive information.
