  • Interpol has announced the results of Operation Synergia III, a multi-month global cybercrime crackdown that involved 72 countries and resulted in over 94 arrests and more than 45,000 malicious IP addresses being sinkholed by law enforcement. The operation, which took place between July 18, 2025, and January 31, 2026, focused on various forms of cybercrime, including phishing, romance scams, and credit card fraud.

The operation was led by Interpol's Cybercrime Directorate, with support from private sector experts and law enforcement agencies around the world. The effort was part of a larger global initiative to combat the growing threat of transnational cybercrime, which has become increasingly sophisticated and destructive in recent years.

According to Neal Jetton, Interpol's director of the Cybercrime Directorate, Operation Synergia III demonstrates the effectiveness of close collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the cybersecurity community. "This kind of international operation highlights the value of close collaboration between law enforcement and the cybersecurity community," said Jetton. "Behind every malicious server or phishing kit sits a wider criminal ecosystem that needs to be mapped and understood before arrests become possible."

The results of Operation Synergia III show that cybercrime is a global problem that requires a coordinated effort to combat. The operation involved 72 countries, which reflects the growing nature of transnational cybercrime. The fact that more than 45,000 malicious IP addresses were associated with suspects suggests that the threat is becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread.

The arrests made during Operation Synergia III include individuals from various countries, including Bangladesh, Togo, and Macau. The operation also resulted in the seizure of over 212 devices, which were tied to "a large range of cybercrime schemes," including loan and employment scams, identity theft, and credit card fraud.

The police in Macau played a significant role in the operation, identifying more than 33,000 phishing and fraud websites that impersonated legitimate organizations. These websites were mainly categorized as fake online casinos that would encourage victims to add money to their balances, which they would never be able to use to gamble.

Private sector experts, including those from Group-IB, S2W, and Trend Micro, also contributed to the operation by providing threat intelligence and support for investigations. Robert McArdle, director of cybercrime research at Trend Micro's TrendAI unit, said that "this kind of international operation highlights the value of close collaboration between law enforcement and the cybersecurity community."

The success of Operation Synergia III underscores the need for continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the cybersecurity community in combating the growing threat of transnational cybercrime. As cybercrime continues to evolve and become more sophisticated, it is essential that we work together to stay one step ahead of these threats.
