In an interview with The Register, Palo Alto Networks' Chief Security Intel Officer Wendi Whitmore has sounded the alarm on a growing threat to cybersecurity: the emergence of AI agents as a new insider threat. According to Whitmore, these autonomous entities pose significant challenges and risks, particularly in light of their increasing prevalence in the industry.
Whitmore highlights the rise of AI-based security operations centers (SOCs) that use machine learning algorithms to analyze publicly known threats against an organization's own private threat-intel data. "The agentic capabilities allow us to start thinking more strategically about how we defend our networks," Whitmore explained. "When we look through the defender lens, a lot of what the agentic capabilities allow us to do is start thinking more strategically about how we defend our networks, versus always being caught in this reactive situation."
This increased focus on proactive defense is driven by the growing number of autonomous AI agents being deployed across various industries. According to Gartner's estimates, 40 percent of all enterprise applications will integrate with task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5 percent in 2025.
While these agents can help fill the ongoing cyber-skills gap that has plagued security teams for years, doing tasks such as correcting buggy code, automating log scans and alert triage, and rapidly blocking security threats, they also pose significant risks. The most pressing concern is the "superuser problem," where autonomous agents are granted broad permissions, creating a virtual "superuser" that can chain together access to sensitive applications and resources without security teams' knowledge or approval.
"This becomes equally as important for us to make sure that we are only deploying the least amount of privileges needed to get a job done, just like we would do for humans," Whitmore emphasized. The second area of concern is the potential misuse of AI agents by attackers, who can manipulate models and systems to conduct new types of attacks.
Whitmore pointed to the "Anthropic attack" as an example of this threat. In these types of attacks, attackers exploit vulnerabilities in AI systems to gain unauthorized access to internal networks and perform malicious activities, such as approving unwanted transactions or manipulating sensitive data.
"It's probably going to get a lot worse before it gets better," Whitmore cautioned, referring to prompt-injection attacks, which have become increasingly prevalent. "Meaning, I just don't think we have these systems locked down enough."
