The report also notes that threat actors are now using AI tools to automate various stages of the attack lifecycle, thereby increasing the speed and efficiency of their operations.

    One group, identified as "UNC6508," has been targeting American academic, medical, and military research institutions, with its activities aligned with the strategic interests of the People's Republic of China. The group has been observed using an open-source AI model within the targets' cloud environments to steal compute resources without leaving a trail that would be detectable using commercial AI models. Furthermore, UNC6508 continues to research how to set up and use AI tools, including using open models locally, and researching vulnerabilities in AI models themselves.

    Another group, traced to Iran, has been using Gemini to generate realistic deepfakes for social engineering campaigns. Instead of relying on a series of prompts to fine-tune the deepfakes' appearance, they have deployed the AI model to autonomously define granular technical parameters, such as camera angles, studio lighting, and realistic facial textures, to achieve photorealistic visual outputs.

    Moreover, GTIG has reported "coordinated campaigns" being carried out on a regular basis to distill proprietary AI systems, which is a violation of Google's terms of service and could be subject to legal action. This practice, known as "deliberate, industrial-scale campaigns to distill U.S. frontier AI systems," has been accused by leading American developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, of being used by Chinese rivals to gain a competitive edge.

    The White House has vowed to crack down on these practices, citing the potential risks to national security and the integrity of AI systems.
