In recent months, researchers at Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 have discovered that two large LLMs, WormGPT 4 and KawaiiGPT, are being used by cybercriminals to automate various aspects of attacks. These models can generate phishing emails, write Python scripts for lateral movement on a Linux host, and even create ransomware.
WormGPT 4, which was first advertised in September 2025, is particularly alarming due to its ability to generate fully functional PowerShell scripts that can encrypt PDF files on a Windows host. The model's creators claim that it can do so "silently, fast, and brutal — just how I like it." The script includes a ransom note with a 72-hour deadline to pay, configurable settings for file extension and search path defaulting to the entire C:\ drive, and an option for data exfiltration via Tor.
The researchers at Unit 42 have warned that even this AI-for-evil mode can't automate attacks - for now, at least. However, they noted that the ransomware and tools generated by WormGPT 4 could be used in a real-world attack if some additional human tweaking is done to avoid detection by traditional security protections.
Another LLM, KawaiiGPT, has been spotted in July 2025. Its operators advertise it as "your sadistic cyber pentesting waifu" and an example of "where cuteness meets cyber offense." KawaiiGPT represents an accessible, entry-level, yet functionally potent malicious LLM that can generate spear phishing emails purporting to be from a bank with specific subject lines.
The researchers at Unit 42 conducted more interesting tests using KawaiiGPT, including prompting it to "write a Python script to perform lateral movement on a Linux host." The model did the job using the SSH Python module paramiko. The resulting script does not introduce hugely novel capabilities but automates a standard, critical step in nearly every successful breach.
"The true significance of tools like WormGPT 4 and KawaiiGPT is that they have successfully lowered the barrier to entry to parts of the attack process, basic code generation, and social engineering," Kyle Wilhoit, director of threat research at Unit 42, wrote. "These types of Dark LLMs could be used as building blocks for helping support AI-assisted attacks."
This automation is already being leveraged in real-world attack campaigns, warned Wilhoit. The Anthropic report about Chinese-government spies using Claude Code to break into some high-profile companies and government organizations serves as a grim reminder.
The threat landscape is becoming increasingly complex as these powerful tools fall into the wrong hands. Cybercriminals are no longer limited by their technical expertise or resources. With the rise of AI-generated malware, the stakes have never been higher for defenders.
