  • Remedio CEO, Tal Kollender, has a warning for businesses and individuals alike: if you don't think like a hacker, you won't win. In an interview with The Register, Kollender discussed her journey from being a teenage gamer to becoming a cybersecurity expert, and how she's using AI-powered technology to protect corporate networks from cyber threats.

Kollender's fascination with hacking began when she was a teenager playing online games, including one that she describes as a cross between Tetris and Icy Tower. She had reached the top of the leaderboard, but an unknown player managed to beat her score, leading her to investigate further. This curiosity eventually led her to explore the world of hacking, including Sony PlayStation games, chat apps, and phones.

After serving in the Israeli Air Force and being reassigned to the IT Corp Cyber Security-Systems Division, Kollender realized that the skills she had developed as a hacker could be used for good. She began working on various cybersecurity projects, but soon realized that traditional methods of vulnerability scanning and remediation were not effective in keeping up with the pace of modern cyber attacks.

That's when Kollender had an epiphany: "Curiosity is the name of the game," she said. "I was always curious. What brought me to what I do now is solving some problems from a different angle." She went on to co-found Remedio, a cybersecurity startup that uses AI-powered technology to find and auto-remediate vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, weak controls, compliance gaps, and other security threats across corporate devices.

The threat landscape has changed dramatically since Kollender's early days as a hacker. In the past, hackers would spend months snooping around networks in search of credentials to allow lateral movement and steal valuable data. But now, with the advent of AI-powered tools, cyber attacks are happening at an unprecedented rate. "Now, they do it in weeks or days," Kollender said. "And if defenders don't keep up the pace and grow" their own usage of the technology, "then the attackers might beat us."

Kollender's approach to cybersecurity is one of innovation and adaptability. Remedio uses AI-powered tools to identify vulnerabilities and misconfigurations in real-time, and then auto-remediates them without disrupting business operations. This approach has been successful for Kollender's clients, including household names like Colgate-Palmolive and Kraft Heinz.

The rise of AI-powered cybersecurity is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it provides defenders with powerful tools to protect against cyber threats. On the other hand, it also means that hackers are now using AI-powered tools to outsmart security measures. As Kollender put it, "It's a battle of AI versus AI, and a race between defenders and attackers."

Despite this challenge, Kollender remains optimistic about the future of cybersecurity. She believes that by working together and sharing knowledge, we can create a safer digital world for everyone.
